The South West Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Forum
brings together professionals, researchers, clinicians, and
organisations working across the ABI pathway to share knowledge,
strengthen collaboration, and
improve outcomes for people affected by brain injury.
Across three meetings in 2026,
the forum will provide an opportunity to hear from expert speakers,
explore emerging research and policy developments, and engage in
meaningful discussion with colleagues
from across health, social care, education, rehabilitation, and the
voluntary sector.
The first meeting of the year
will feature two insightful presentations exploring the wider impact of
brain injury and the importance of quality rehabilitation.
Dr Alyson Norman, Associate Professor in Psychology at Plymouth University, Co-Chair of Anchor Point and Vice Chair of UKABIF, will present “Anchor Point: For the Family – Ripples After Brain Injury.”
Anchor Point works to raise awareness of the profound and often
overlooked impact that brain injury has on families. Dr Norman will
discuss the organisation’s work supporting families affected by brain
injury and highlight why recognising family experiences is essential to
improving care and support systems.
Kate Tantam,
Specialist Sister in ICU Rehabilitation within the Critical Care
Rehabilitation Team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, will
present “Recovery Beyond Survival.”
This talk will review the quality of rehabilitation following admission to an intensive care unit, drawing on findings from the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcomes and Death (NCEPOD).
The session will explore how rehabilitation can support recovery after
critical illness and why coordinated rehabilitation pathways are vital
for improving long-term outcomes.
The presentations will be followed by questions, discussion, and networking, providing attendees with the opportunity to share perspectives and connect with others working across the ABI field.
We are grateful to Enable Law for generously providing the venue and refreshments for this event.
