All three of UKABIF's Special Interest Groups presented at the International Conference on Paediatric Acquired Brain Injury run by IPBIS in Glasgow from 18-21 September 2024.
The biannual event attracted over 400 delegates with 71 speakers from 24 countries. The quality and breadth of the presentations was excellent, with keynotes from Prof Chris Giza (US), Prof Steve Clifford (UK) and Dr Shannon Scratch (Canada). The Acquired Brain Injury Justice Network hosted the Lord Ramsbotham Memorial Lecture, introduced by Professor Nathan Hughes with presentations from Professor Tom McMillan and Professor Liam Dorris. TheNational Acquired Brain Injury in Learning & Education Syndicate (N-ABLES)ran a symposium entitled ‘Nothing about us with out us: Putting Lived Experience of ABI at the Forefront of Research and Practice’. The session was introduced by our Young Experts by Experience in ABI group (YEBEABI) and featured presentations from Rachel KeetleyShannon Scratch, Jennifer Lundine and Edel Jannecke Svendsen. Our enormous thanks to them and also toCharlotte Giblin, Dr Gemma Costelloand Dr Emily Bennett who organised the session. FinallyEleanor Bryantpresented her work exploring educators understanding of acquired brain injury in a session entitled 'A UK-Based Survey Exploring Educators’ Understanding of Childhood Acquired Brain Injury (ABI): Evidence of Training Gaps and Insufficient Policy Implementation in Schools'. UKABIF also formed part of the local organising committee, chaired by Professor Liam Dorrisworking alongsideBeth Wicks Dr Katie Byard, Dr Gemma Costello, Dr Emily Bennett,Gerard AndersonLisa TuranLorna Walesand Stacey Dodd. The committee have worked alongside the conference organisers and IPBIS for two years planning the event.
