NABLES (The National Acquired Brain Injury in
Learning and Education Syndicate) has been shortlisted as a finalist for
its ground breaking collaborative work. The
Syndicate has secured its place as a finalist in the Child Brain Injury
Trust’s Diamond Awards in the Collaboration Award Category. NABLES
was established to identify ways to support education professionals in
gaining a minimum level of awareness and understanding about acquired
brain injury and the educational requirements of children and young
people with acquired brain injury. The NABLES steering group is comprised of Dr
Emily Bennett, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist at Nottingham
University Hospitals NHS Trust; Dr Gemma Costello, Head of Psychosocial
Services, The Children's Trust, Tadworth Court; Baroness Morris of
Yardley; Petrina Sill, CEO the Eden Dora Trust for Children with
Encephalitis; Professor Nathan Hughes, Professorial Research Fellow at
Sheffield University, Lisa Turan, CEO of the Child Brain Injury Trust,
and Chloe Hayward, Executive Director of UKABIF. Chloe
Hayward, Executive Director of UKABIF, said: “It is wonderful to be
recognised in the CBIT’s Diamond Awards. NABLES was set up on the back
of recommendations made in the All-Party Parliamentary Group for
acquired brain injury’s Time for Change report. It was very clear that
there was a widespread lack of training and information in this area for
education professionals. “Through
our collaborative working we are continuing to meet with
representatives from the Department for Education and working with the
National Association of Special Educational Needs we have produced a
film about brain injury for newly qualified teachers. “All the partners in NABLES are delighted to be recognised with this Award nomination.” NABLES has also published ‘ABI return – Children and Young People with Acquired Brain Injury – guiding their return to education’ . This publication assists professionals involved in helping children
and young people with acquired brain injury prepare for, and achieve, a
successful return to education. The winners will be announced at the CBIT Awards Ceremony on 4 March 2022.
