A dedicated daughter is attempting a three-peak challenge in memory of her Mum – and to raise funds to fight for improved understanding of acquired brain injury.
In July 2000, Anita Pascoe’s 54-year-old Mum, Ann, collapsed following a brain hemorrhage and she remained severely brain injured until her death earlier this year.
Anita, from Plymouth, said: “We had a journey together that spanned over 20 years and while we met many outstanding people along the way, again and again her brain injury was misunderstood, her needs were not met and rehabilitation and specialist care was denied to her. We fought for Mum and instead of going straight to a nursing home as planned, she accessed extended rehabilitation and managed to go home into an adapted property with paid care. This rehab enabled her to participate in life - something she would not have achieved from a nursing home bed.”
Now, Anita is raising funds for UKABIF by attempting to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours on 1
st September 2021.
Anita added: “I firmly believe that change comes from influencing policymakers and promoting a better understanding of brain injuries across all domains, and that is what UKABIF does. I want everyone who survives a brain injury to have rehabilitation and specialist care without needing to fight for it.”
Chloe Hayward, Executive Director of UKABIF, said: “We are extremely grateful to Anita for taking on this epic challenge. Her Mum, Ann, was fortunate to have family that fought for her to access rehabilitation, but we know that there are many people with brain injuries that do not have someone to shout their corner. We work to ensure that everyone who needs it has access to specialist services and to see improved understanding of acquired brain injuries across all sectors.”
